7 1/2 lessons about the brain

This book was fascinating and talked about how our brain is a network that talks to each other and how we live in a “made-up society.” Everything that is considered a “societal norm” is just a made up thing that we have made over a great many years. I didn’t agree with her views on evolution, but that’s only because, while I believe that we do change over time, I don’t think that we’ve evolved from apes and that’s just based on what I see in front of me (that view has changed since I wrote this and I will go into that sooner or later). Anyways, this book talks a lot about how our brain isn’t primarily designed to think, but to regulate our bodies and that our bodies are part of our brains and that our brains are part of our bodies, which I concur with. You can’t really do very much with your brain if it’s not connected to something that let’s it be actionable, likewise your body is just an inanimate object without a brain. So, now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about the real things in this book and how I will apply them to my life.

Key takeaways: Sometimes you expect something to happen and then your brain hallucinates you into thinking that that is what’s happening (See Guerilla and the guy that almost killed a farmer boy). The main takeaway from this book though, for me, is that humans are social creatures that have the 5 C’s: Creativity, Communication, Copying, Cooperation, and Compression. This basically means that this is why we are human because we have these 5 traits, even if they aren’t always seen the same way. Another takeaway is that we have one brain, not 3, not 2, but one brain and that most things about the brain are metaphors (See right side brain and left side brain).

The brain is really complex and there are so many variables it takes in on a daily basis and we have to take care of our brains and filter what comes in and out of them. There’s so much that we need to think about and we need to take care of both components: our bodies and our brains.

Have a good day everyone!
