Difficult Conversations

Difficult Conversations by Douglas Stone + Bruce Patton + Sheila Heen

This book breaks down difficult conversations and how to approach them and helps to sort our thoughts and find out what the other person is feeling and when to take a step back from the conversation. The book wants to help us be able to observe what we’re feeling and to break down our defensiveness and be able to open up and talk to each other. The book talks about stepping into the other person’s shoes and being able to see things from their point of view and understanding that and finding a compromise. The book also talks about how we attack people’s identities (See Identity Crisis) and how that raises up a defensiveness in them that we see so much today. I highly recommend this book because we need to learn how to have civilized discussions and difficult conversations because they help us grow and help us to become better people. So many people want to talk and be heard, I mean I made a blog so I don’t have too much room to talk, but sometimes we just need to listen. We need to sit and listen to what the other person is saying and then talk it out. We need to be able to seek for more information and be able to calm down and sort through our thoughts before we get angry. I have a lot of room to improve in this area, but I will keep trying to have difficult conversations so I can grow and become someone better and become a human. Good luck with your difficult conversations and if they aren’t even trying to see your point of view, then sometimes you have to let them go, even if they are family. “Family don’t end in blood.” Have fun and it will take time to learn so be patient with yourself and just be open to having them because that’s how you grow.
