Freedom (Miscellaneous Monday #4)

Today is the day of freedom: July 4th, 1776. 146 years ago. I saw myself writing this post in a dream and I remember writing “what is freedom“ and then deleting what I had wrote and redoing it all. Because I don’t know what freedom is. It’s being able to choose, being able to choose what you want. Sometimes it feels like that freedom is impeded on, by someone more powerful than you, by the police, by your own brain telling you what you should write. I see the future, do you know how much it feels like that impedes on my ability to choose? But I can still choose to change what I see a lot of the time, I can see something and remember it before and then choose to change it. That’s my freedom. Freedom to live for myself and to help others. I want that for everyone, the freedom to choose. There are people that always say “my hands are tied,” but there’s always a choice. There is always a choice no matter what. The Founding Fathers chose freedom, we choose everyday how we exhibit that freedom. It’s not that cut and dry - the founding fathers weren’t perfect, they still had slaves, they still looked down on woman but we have come so far and we still have a long way to go but at least we have the chance to think about where we want to go with the freedom that has been granted to us. Freedom is being able to look at what should be done, but isn’t right and saying no. Freedom is standing up for what you believe in whether anyone sees it or not. We are free. - Alex Risdall
