Learning Log #1

This is sort of like a journal, but for all of the things I learned today. Instead of reflecting on the day and all that happened, I want to focus on the things I learned from today.

Today I learned where my classes are for University and where I’m being an RA. I learned about experimentation while learning and how I should try out different techniques in relation to other techniques to try and find which one works best. I learned about drawing and trying to draw faces better and that I should print out what faces I want to draw better and try and copy their facial structure to learn the face better. I learned about vectors and scalars and how vectors have direction and magnitude (e.g. velocity), while scalars only have magnitude (e.g. Volume and speed). Some of this was a refresher for me, but most of it wasn’t. Another story I learned today was about the Polgar family. I had heard it before but it was a good reminder today. The story goes that Laszlo Polgar wanted to see if he could create a genius, so he homeschooled his three daughters and turned them into chess “prodigies.” He did so by cultivating their natural curiosity and giving them positive reinforcement and letting them explore on their own what they wanted to do. In return, ⅔ of the girls became chess grandmasters with the third becoming an international chess master. All this to say that our upbringing can define who we are, but I don’t think that should be the main takeaway. The main takeaway I think is that anyone can be a genius given the proper circumstances, but if you don’t give yourself those circumstances then you’ll never have a chance. Intrinsic motivation is hard to cultivate, but it’s so worth it to find a way to motivate yourself and to learn discipline and focus because they will help you so much later in life. I learn because it’s what makes me feel alive and because I think that it’s important to know as much as I can so that I can help the most people.

Today was a good learning day and I hope that I continue to develop the skills that I developed today. The main skills I’m working on right now are: Drawing

Computer Science

Public Speaking

Writing I think that these four core skills are going to reflect on each other and help each other to become better. I’ll have detailed plans coming soon on exactly how I’m practicing these skills and then daily updates to practice my writing. See you guys soon with another learning log! I’m going to be doing them when I think that I learned something in a day that needs to be remembered clearly, but not all knowledge will be in these - that would get tedious and could just be a huge time waste if not done correctly.
