Living

“All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on.” - Havelock Ellis

I had moved away from writing these to do something more akin to James Clear and I really liked how simple it was to do, but I stopped writing what I thought and I don’t think that’s what I want.

Lately, I’ve been cleaning my room and trying to figure out what to get rid of and what to keep. I’ve been putting up photos of people that I once knew super well and now I don’t talk to as much. It’s helped me start to say goodbye to those people that aren’t in my life anymore, but still keeps them in my life in some capacity. I don’t want to forget the people that used to be in my life because they made me who I am, but dwelling on the past and wishing for it back isn’t going to help me make new memories.

Letting go, holding on. There’s a balance between the two and finding that balance is hard because it’s so easy to get caught up in both sides of the spectrum. Holding on too long or letting go of people that you should be holding onto. People come and go from our lives and that’s okay and you can still check in on them, but you have to let them go at the same time. It’s important to leave the door open, to allow people to come in and out of your life. Life isn’t meant to be lived alone, but some people will just need to leave your life for a bit, whether they want to or not.

“Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create the fact.” - William James

It’s easy to get caught up in the negatives of life, to get so caught up in the day to day that we forget about the joys of the day to day. Your friend that’s checking in on you, your friends at work that you get the opportunity to work with. I’m not saying that you always need to be grateful, life sucks sometimes and you can’t be grateful for every circumstance. It’s okay to feel awful about a particular circumstance, but you still need to get up and believe that life is worth living.

The question I have for your this week is this: What will you do today to make sure that you’re living a life and not just letting it pass you by.

Good luck and all the best,

Alex Risdall :)
